Getting SSH via cron job with Reverse Remote Shell

by on Feb.22, 2011, under Networking

I have been developing some web applications for a friend for some time and I finally got to a point where I needed an SSH shell to test some scripts I wrote in Python.  Up until recently, I had been using FTP to upload my PHP files and then just browse to the protected page to test the functionality.  The hosting provider only offers FTP to upload files and has SSH disabled to my friend.  While I have FTP access to his server, the only thing I could use was cron jobs that could only run as often as 15 minutes.  While I could wait that long to see if everything runs smoothly, fixing one set of errors and waiting 15 minutes for the next would be a little ridiculous.  The rest of this post is how I ended up getting SSH on the remote server with a little program called Reverse Remote SSH (RRS).

Welcome to The Dusty Bit

by on Feb.12, 2011, under Uncategorized

Thank you for visiting the Dusty Bit.  While the site is going through the final stages of being set up, let me explain what the purpose of this blog is.  My name is Dustin Pettigrew.  I’m a graduate student at the University of Tulsa studying Computer Science with a specialty in Computer Security.  I have never had a proper tech blog nor have I focused on anything that I could produce that would interest other peers in my field.  As I have started my graduate work, I have had some ideas that would be suitable content for a tech blog, but not a proper place to put it.  I have a personal blog over at DustStorm.org where I have been posting everything, which has made it quite a mess to filter through all my interests in gaming, technology, and machinima.  This new website is part of an effort to segregate my online presence to focus on its intended audience.  This blog will focus on my technical side, including things like my thoughts on tech news, projects I’m working on, etc.  Again thanks for visiting and be sure to check back soon as I will be making my first posts (aside from this one) shortly.
